Mrs. Amelia Bertero
de Romano
Amelia Bertero de Romano (B.Sc. Agr.,
University of Esperanza, Argentina) has been active in sunflower phytopathological research and breeding for over 44 years,
in both public and private organizations. From 1969 to 1979 she worked as
researcher in the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (National
Institute of Agricultural Technology), Pergamino
Experimental Station, where she studied oilseed crop diseases and introgression
of genetic resistance to them in elite lines. During that period, she studied
the changes in the racial populations of Puccinia helianthi in Argentina, and she produced a complete
description of the sunflower main diseases in Argentina. During this time, she was
also co-author of the Guayacán II INTA open
pollinated cultivar, and she also participated in the improvement of
populations, such as Aguaribay INTA and Charata INTA cultivars, and lines, the most outstanding of
which was line 71538, a Puccinia helianthii
differential. Mrs. Bertero de Romano moved to
Continental, a private company, in 1980, where she collaborated in the
improvement and development of new hybrids, such as Contiflor
3, Contiflor 9 and Contiflor
15. All of them have been extensively grown in Argentina and bordering
countries.
As from the beginning of the 1980´s Mrs. Bertero de Romano
determined a new race of Verticillium dahliae Kleb for Argentina and quantified yield
losses due to this disease. She has also participated in heritability studies
of sunflower osmotic adjustment capacity with colleagues from the University of
Buenos Aires.
From 1988 until recently, Mrs. Bertero de Romano worked
as a researcher in the NIDERA S.A. company, where she has
studied the effects of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on sunflower yield, and developed a new
methodology for Verticillium dahliae
Kleb inoculation. She developed lines with Plasmopara halstedii, Verticillium dahliae Kleb, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Puccinia helianthii resistance, which have been introgressed
the hybrids currently sown by Argentine sunflower growers. These dimensions of
her work are clearly reflected in her contributions to breeding (see cultivar
list, below, which includes cultivars registered in Argentina and in several
countries in Europe) and research (see publications list, below). Her work on
sunflower phytopathology has received international recognition, as reflected
in the citations her articles have received (in Google Scholar [GS]) and in her
current position as leader of the FAO Working Sub-group on Verticillium
dahliae Kleb.
